So, I work in social media and I can say with certainty that Instagram is my absolute favorite social medium. Funny, right? Especially considering how much I love writing and that both my degrees (YAY for being done with grad school!) are in communications.
Alas, it’s my favorite. It’s colorful and engaging, and I simply love its visual nature. I’ve found that I’m actually on Instagram more often than my other accounts. I love it and I can unashamedly say that I might be slightly obsessed.
My Instagram + the Boston Globe
So, you can only imagine my ridiculous and overwhelming excitement when the sweet Rachel Razcka of the Boston Globe reached out and asked if she could feature me. Seriously, it was the coolest.
She’s so kind and so easy to talk to, I felt like I was chatting with a friend when we had our quick phone call.
….A quick phone call that resulted in my Instagram making it into the Sunday Boston Globe!
It’s funny..because I was in Washington D.C. perusing the White House grounds and hanging out with Bo Obama, or B’Obama as I’ve nicknamed him, when the article was published (in print). I ran around D.C. attempting to find a printed copy to show to my family and my fella, T., (who were all in D.C. with me), but my search was fruitless.
Luckily, my good friend A. was able to pick up a copy for me! So, when I flew home on a 6 a.m. flight I was so excited to come home and see my name in print. Sure, I was sad to be saying “see you later” to my best friend and long distance beau, but I was absurdly excited to see that nifty article in print.
How to get Noticed
Here are my favorite tips and tricks on getting your Instagram profile out there:
- Post frequently. Not too frequently, but you’ll want to be posting regularly if you want others to start finding your account
- Find hashtags you like and start using them. I personally love #flashesofdelight and #abmlifeiscolorful, but find your own and start sharing photos that fit into or make sense with your chosen hashtag(s).
- Be active. Seriously. Track down other users who share images that inspire you. My shortlist? @OhHappyDay, @MichelleKMartin, @theproperblog, and @brittnimehlhoff. Okay, there are a ton more that inspire me every day, but here’s a few for you to check out!
- Tell a story. This is huge. The accounts I love the most are those that are consistent, have a theme, or have a certain color scheme. Right now, I’m loving bright colors, summer fruits, and palm trees.
