On creating an outdoor oasis in a small backyard space.

When we bought our house, we knew we had big plans for the backyard. And by big plans, I mean hosting friends and family (click the link for a fun summery cocktail recipe!) and making the most out of our little outdoor space.
Having lived in Boston for years, I was used to not having any outdoor space at all. Zilch.
Now, we’re lucky enough to have a mini backyard! And, she’s a gem. We have our deck, which takes up about half of the space, that my husband was able to add on to with help from a friend of ours. Extending the deck a few feet gave us SO much more usable space, and they were able to get the project done in one afternoon! Talk about a major win.
That small extension meant we’re now able to fit a sofa, two chairs, a coffee table, and some additional end tables which makes hosting out there so much easier.
An adorable and functional backyard was the goal and I think we’re there!
I teamed up with Wayfair in bringing the finishing touches to our outdoor oasis and I am so smitten with everything we grabbed. Here’s what we picked to make our outdoor space as functional and enjoyable as possible.
Creating a functional outdoor oasis
- A rug! I love this one we found from Wayfair. The pattern is the ideal size for the space and it’s big without being too distracting. Plus it complements the color of the deck and the furniture. If you’re looking for rugs for your outdoor space, check Wayfair’s collection out.
- Extra side tables. I love having our big coffee table in the middle, but the side tables are perfect for moving around and placing them where we need them. This comes in handy when we’re hosting friends (which feels so good to do! I missed it so much). I know we don’t need more side tables, but I can’t seem to stop shopping for them.
- A coffee table that’s the right height for your sofa. Be sure to measure the height before purchasing, we almost snagged one that would have been way too low for the sofa we picked and while it wouldn’t have been a major issue, it would have been uncomfortably low.
- Trays. Whether you keep them inside or out, trays make carrying all of our snacks and drinks outside (and usually books, too) so much easier. Fewer trips = more time to enjoy being outdoors.
- String lights for soft light and cozy vibes. Pro tip: Measure first! You may need more than one strand of string lights.
- A blanket or throw for chilly nights or as an extra layer of protection from mosquitoes 😅
