5 Fall wines to serve over Thanksgiving (and into winter, too!)
Let’s start here: I love wine. I love enjoying a glass of effervescent wine over appetizers and a glass of red wine over dinner. I’m a big fan of red wine, I prefer that over white and rosé. However, it’s too hot to enjoy red wine most of the year in Atlanta. So, the minute the cooler weather rolls in, it’s red wine season.
Here’s what I love in a fall wine. I know there’s no such thing, technically speaking, as a fall wine, but I do think that wine is highly seasonal. For example, this list for a summer wine would look much different.
What makes a fall wine a favorite for me
Bold and big
Peppery
Jammy
Lots of funk
And on the flip side, a light effervescent wine (like Pét-Nats!)
Now, here are 5 fall wines that I think you’ll enjoy over Thanksgiving dinner. Or any old weekday dinner. Or even into the holiday season! The options are endless. Except for this list, which only include 5 wines to keep it simple.
If you like posts like these, please do let me know! I’m thinking I may start building these out for each season to condense my favorite recs into one spot.
5 Deliciously unique fall wines for Thanksgiving
Pétulant Naturel Malvasia Bianca by Birichino. This wine is approachable, deliciously light and bubbly, and a little wild. The maker describes this wine as “Forecast: cloudy with a chance of amazeballs” and if that’s not enough to convince you to grab a bottle, I’m not sure what will!
Gamine Grenache by Division. Anything Division makes is going to be delicious. I know I’m holding them to high standards, but I love everything I’ve ever had by them. Hoping I get to visit them next time I’m out in the PNW.
2018 Estate Pinot Noir by Scribe. Scribe’s Estate Pinot Noir is on my list, and while we’re at it, so is visiting Scribe. I love their wines, branding, experience, all of it. And, I love a good Estate wine (this means that 100% of the grapes must be grown on land owned/controlled by the winery). This one has notes of dark cherry, blood orange, and mint. Yum, am I right?
Grenache ‘Sucette’ by An Approach to Relaxation. This is my favorite wine of all time, and it starts with a funny story about a wine tasting that turned into dinner with strangers that turned into a shattered bottle of this wine in the middle of a restaurant. Perhaps I’ll share it all one day, it was a great night! But, this wine started it at all and also kickstarted an obsession with special ordering it. Yes, this wine is very funky. Yes, this wine will most likely need to be special ordered, but your local wine shop should be able to get it for you. And, it is WORTH it.
Cocobon Roasted Oak Red Blend. YES, please get this wine. It’s divine and quite affordable. And, you can find it at your local Trader Joe’s. It’s under $15 and one of my all-time favorite easy wines. It’s rich, aromatic, and offers up hints of chocolate and espresso, with a bit of spice on the finish.
What times of “fall wines” do you enjoy most? So excited to hear what you love and which ones you’ll be trying out this year.
