How we spent a weekend in Asheville, NC – including a tomato-themed brunch with feedfeed!
I’ve been to Asheville only once before this trip. And, what I saw, I liked.
How can you not like a small city in the mountains with lots of books, coffee, food, and beer?
I mean, those are all my favorite things!
Okay, not all of them. But four of them. So, I was pretty thrilled when I saw an invite pop up in my inbox from the feedfeed.
It was for a brunch celebration at Rhubarb with Tutturosso Tomatoes and Teri from No Crumbs Left (and an editor at feedfeed.
Tim and I arrived around 4ish, so we didn’t have a full day to explore. We figured we wouldn’t rush up, like we normally do when traveling anywhere. Instead, we dropped our pup Clover off with some dear friends of ours – who also treated us to a delicious breakfast before we hit the road. Talk about the sweetest way to kick off a mini road trip, right?
Once we arrived (it’s about a 3.5 hour drive), we dropped off our things and headed downstairs to catch the free (yes, FREE!) shuttle downtown. I know it sounds silly, but we were pretty pumped to have a free shuttle on hand. And it not only dropped us off wherever we wanted to go, but it also picked us up at the end of the night. Ha! It was glorious.
Once we made it into town, we headed to Bhramari Brewing Company – a recommendation from a friend of ours who lives in Atlanta now but is originally from Asheville. We enjoyed – well – SO many beers at Bhramari and also snacked on the pickled egg (SO GOOD), Spent Grain Pretzels, and the Patatas Machismo. It was all so good. Get it all, then bring some back for me in Atlanta, please.
After Bhramari, we swung by Buxton Hall to put our names in for dinner. It’s downright delicious barbecue, that’s all you need to know. And, while we waited, we hopped on over to Catawba Brewingfor a beer. It’s right next door. Literally, you don’t even have to go outside to get between the two. That’s my kind of dinner commute.
We were stuffed and happy after dinner, and called our handy shuttle to head back to our hotel. We promptly passed out thanks to all that food & beer.
Day two started with a morning drive downtown. We dropped the car off and walked over to Trade and Lore for coffee and snack. I had the iced latte on draft with pistachio and rosewater. I kid you not. It was delicious.
And, after we were property caffeinated, we made our way to Rhubarb for a very tomato-y brunch with feedfeed.
To sum it up: It was delightful. I’ve never had so many tomatoes in one sitting in my life! Everything was so good, especially the clarified sparkling bloody mary. Yes, did you know that was even a thing because I surely did not! I had mine with mezcal and topped it with some pickles and veggies, which only seemed right.
Now I need to figure out how to make that at home. I’ve never been a bloody mary fan, but this one changed my mind!
After brunch, we meandered downtown and stopped in a few shops. We visited the Battery Park Book Exchange and Downtown Books & News, which I chatted a bit about on my little bookstagram.
Now I’m curious, as we didn’t have much time in Asheville, where do we NEED to go next time we’re in town? Would love to hear your favorite spots!
